Most chapters of draft Association Agreement have been provisionally closed
Negotiations on most chapters of the draft Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU have been provisionally closed, stated EU's chief negotiator Gunnar Wiegand after the 12th round of talks ended in Chisinau on Friday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to the EU official, issues concerning justice and law enforcement are still to be discussed, and much of the on-going negotiations center on the creation of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. Gunnar Wiegand highlighted the necessity of a gradual adjustment to EU standards, which, according to him, would bring Europe into Moldova, helping the latter to attract foreign investment and ensure a better environment for innovation and tourism.
Both Gunnar Wiegand and Natalia Gherman, Moldova's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, have voiced their hope that the negotiations on the Agreement will be completed in 2013. “Considering the progress made, this objective is achievable”, stated Natalia Gherman. According to her, one of the greatest challenges for the Moldovan negotiating team is to include provisions on Moldova’s EU prospects in the final text of the Agreement.
Negotiations on the Association Agreement started in January 2010.
