Most banknotes in circulation are 1 leu and 200 lei

Banknotes with a face value of 1 leu and 200 lei together represent half of the amount of banknotes in circulation in the Republic of Moldova, according to the National Bank, which published the structure and volume of the national currency in circulation as of December 31, 2021.

There are 83.49 million 1 leu banknotes in circulation, or 26.26% of the total. Another 81.49 million banknotes, or 25.63%, are 200 lei, with a total value of 16.3 billion lei.

The rarest banknotes are 1000 lei. The 4.46 million notes make up 1.5% of the total. Another 3.7% are 500 lei notes, which are 11.76 million in number and have a total value of 5.88 billion lei.

In total, there are 317.91 notes in circulation – denominated in 1 leu, 5 lei, 20 lei, 50 lei, 100 lei, 200 lei, 500 lei, and 1000 lei – with a total value of 34.49 billion lei.
