Thirty cases of salmonella were recorded in Tiraspol in July alone. Twenty of these cases were reported in children younger than 14, including younger than one year. The infection rate was 19.8 cases per 100,000 people, up 5.6 times compared with the average for the last few years, Angela Muntean, a specialist of the Tiraspol Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology, said at a news conference, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent informs. A similar situation was reported in other settlements of the Transnistrian region. Twenty-eight cases of salmonella were reported in Bender town, and by one case in Grigoriopol, Rabnita and Dubasari, Angela Muntean said. This bacterium is found in food that was not thermally processed such as milk, meat products, eggs or unwashed fruit and vegetables that have been kept at room temperature. Samples of water are taken from the region’s ponds every week. The salmonella bacterium was detected in seven samples of water, all taken from the Nistru River. Salmonella is an infection of the small intestine. General symptoms of salmonella include cramps, diarrhea and fever, in some cases nausea and vomiting as well. Usually, the infected persons recover in several days without receiving treatment. However, the diseases can be dangerous, especially for babies, pregnant women and persons with low immunity.
