Midwives will have the right to manage physiological labor processes without the surveillance of the obstetrician. The medical specialist will assist only in case of difficult deliveries or at request. The new procedure will be yet applied after a faculty of nurses and midwives is set up at the State University of Medicine. The subject was discussed in the Conference of the Association of Midwives of the Republic of Moldova on May 5, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the Ministry of Health.
In a number of European states, the profession of midwife is studied at university. The university diploma ensures more tasks and responsibilities for midwives. The Association of Midwives promotes the implementation of the international experience in the field in Moldova.
The Association’s deputy head Oxana Zavtoni said that when the profession of midwife is studied at the faculty, the midwives will have more freedom of action. “We assist deliveries and encourage mothers to breastfeed. We psychologically and emotionally prepare the families for natural birth giving and help women to overcome depression that appears after giving birth. But we want more freedoms in our job,” stated Oxana Zavtoni.
In this connection, Minister of Health Ruxanda Glavan said she will take the measures needed to increase the professionalism and prestige of midwives in the Republic of Moldova.
Over 600 midwives work in Moldova at present. They have a salary of 2,700 and 3,400 lei.
