In the first ten months of this year, 740 children left their homes or abandoned the social protection service foster home where they were placed. Law enforcement bodies sound the alarm. Compared to the same period of last year, the number of juvenile fugitives is higher by 200. In just four days, between November 25 and 28, the police registered 13 new cases, while four children are missing for a long time.
The General Police Inspectorate press officer, Mariana Bețivu, told IPN that it is often the case that parents announce the police in a few days pass after the child goes missing, which makes the police work more difficult. There is a risk that the child may be exposed to danger. In this context, parents are urged to immediately notify law enforcement at the emergency number 112 or by going directly to the police precinct. Parents can also address any police crew they encounter.
According to IGP data, out of the 740 fugitive children, 534 left home and 206 left placement institutions. Among the main reasons why children resort to abandonment are the lack of adult supervision, fear of the parents' reaction to the school situation or to a committed mistake. The poor financial situation and family conflicts also affect the phenomenon.
Specialists urge adults to supervise their children, to make sure they always know where and with whom they are leaving. Children should be taught that they shouldn't talk to strangers or accept different goods from them. Under no circumstance should the child get into cars with strangers or accompany them, regardless of pretext.
