More disfavored families to benefit from social assistance in 2012

More disfavored families will receive social support and cold-month assistance from January 1, 2012. In a news conference on Thursday, Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family Valentina Buliga said the minimum state guaranteed monthly income, on the basis of which the beneficiaries of social benefits are selected, has increased, Info-Prim Neo reports. The minimum state guaranteed income in 2012 is 640 lei, as against 575 lei last year. The cold-month assistance is offered to families whose monthly income per capita is lower that the minimum state guaranteed monthly income multiplied by 1.4, i.e. 896 lei. The social support for families on low incomes is set for six months and does not exceed a two-year period within which the family must improve its financial situation. “Thus, more families on low incomes will become eligible for social support and cold-month assistance,” said the minister. In order to receive social support and cold-month assistance, the family must file one application to the social assistant at the local mayor’s office or at the Social Assistance Division if the applicants are from Chisinau. Afterward, the district Social Assistance and Family Protection Section takes a decision as regards the right to receive assistance, based on the data declared by the family. About 72,000 disfavored families have received at least one social assistance payment of 700 lei on average since last November. More than 80% of these families included at least one child. A sum of 438 million lei was earmarked in the 2012 state budget for paying social benefits, as opposed to 330 million lei in 2011. 71 million lei will go to pay cold-month assistances, compared with 30 million lei last year.
