More and more couples apply to registry offices, asking that their marriages are registered on September 9 – 09.09.09. Last year, a record number of about 450 couples in Moldova got married on 08.08.08, which was considered a symbolic date, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Alexandra Bacioi, vice director of the Registry Office of the Ministry of Information Development, as the number of applications is rising, the authorities are considering rerunning last year’s event, when 60 couples got married during a joint ceremony in the square of the National Opera House in Chisinau on August 8. About 26,000 couples registered their civil marriages in 2008. Out of these, about 1,000 Moldovans married foreigners, mainly Turks, Ukrainians and Russians. Also, there were recorded 24,000 divorces.
