The medically insured persons will be able to benefit from in vitro fertilization within the mandatory health insurance system. The Ministry of Health proposed a relevant amendment to the Law on Reproductive Health, IPN reports.
According to the Ministry’s data, the fertility rate has continuously decreased during the last few years and is now 1.2-1.3 children per couple. This is much lower than the level needed to substitute generations.
The data of the Center for Reproductive Health and Medical Genetics show that about 20% of the couples (approximately 140,000 couples) of the total number suffer from a particular form of fertility. In the case of 2.5% of the sterile couples, the problem of infertility can be solved only by assisted reproductive technology or in vitro fertilization.
The amendment suggested to Article 20 of the Law on Reproductive Health will exclude the principle of discrimination of couples on grounds of incomes and will respect the right of taxpayers within the mandatory health insurance system to assisted human reproduction services based on medical indications only.
