Monuments protected by state destroyed with corrupt functionaries' consent

The architectural property of the capital city is in a state of dilapidation. The monuments are demolished or reconstructed without preserving their authenticity with the consent of the local authorities, who sign urbanism projects through ignorance or for reward. The finding was made public by the Agency for the Inspection and Restoration of Monuments, which started to monitor the architectural patrimony in Chisinau's historical center. “One third of the monuments protected by the state have been demolished or have suffered modifications in their structure, their authenticity and integrity being damaged,” the Agency's director Ion Stefanita told Info-Prim Neo. The Agency for the Inspection and Restoration of Monuments asked the central and local authorities to intervene and stop the destruction of the patrimony. Ion Stefanita said the State Construction Inspectorate often does not investigate the cases reported by specialists. The issue of degradation of the city's historical center was raised in 2003, when an inspection was carried out to examine the state of the monuments in Chisinau. Architect Boris Gangal, the head of the Architecture, Patrimony and Design Center SITE, said the monuments are demolished illegally and reconstructed incorrectly. The Agency for the Inspection and Restoration of Monuments started to monitor the patrimony in Chisinau's historical center in December last year. So far, it has examined 500 of the 977 monuments included in the Register of Monuments Protected by the State.
