The monument to martyrs Alexei Mateevici, Simeon Murafa and Andrei Hodorogea will be built by reconstruction in the square of the Metropolitan Cathedral “God’s Birth” of Chisinau. A decision to this effect was taken by the Cabinet on May 11, IPN reports.
The monument to the three personalities, who promoted the national movement in Bessarabia at the beginning of the 20th century, was installed near the Cathedral in 1923. In 1940, the bronze parts of the monument were taken to Romania, while the stone parts were destroyed.
Alexei Mateevici is the author of the ode “Our Language” that became Moldova’s anthem in 1994. Simeon Murafa was a publicist and editor of the newspaper “Moldovan Word”, while Andrei Hodorogea was an engineer. All the three were important figures in the political and cultural life of Bessarabia.
In the same meeting, the Cabinet accepted the proposal to build a monument to Ruler Stephan the Great in Costesti village of Ialoveni district following a request by villagers, who invoked the necessity of strengthening the patriotic education of the young generation.
The costs for designing and building the two monuments will be covered with donations and external sponsorships.
