Monument to Hungarian heroes unveiled in Chisinau

A monument to Hungarian heroes killed in World War III was unveiled in Chisinau on July 3. The unveiling ceremony was attended by acting Minister of Defense Viorel Cibotaru and his Hungarian counterpart Csaba Hende, who is in Chisinau on a working visit. The monument forms part of the Memorial Complex “Eternity”. Csaba Hende expressed his gratitude to Moldova for the assistance provided to discover and rebury the bones of the compatriots who were deported and died in concentration camps on Moldova’s territory during World War II, IPN reports.

“We are here, at the cemetery of the Memorial Complex “Eternity”, where heroes were buried far from their motherland. We must bear in mind that a component part of us perished with the death of these persons. The memories of the devastating war will always remain in our hearts,” stated Csaba Hende.

For his part, Viorel Cibotaru noted the efficient cooperation between Moldova and Hungary in looking after the graves and building monuments and funeral stones for victims of wars. “The result of the efforts made by our countries is the unveiling in Chisinau of a monument do Hungarian soldiers and civilians who died in World War II,” said the acting minister.

Csaba Hende and Viorel Cibotaru had a meeting at the Center of Military Culture and History. The officials exchanged opinions on situation in the region and he bilateral military cooperation. They pleaded for intensifying the Moldovan-Hungarian relations by implementing joint projects to build monuments in memory of war victims and to lay out the military cemeteries locate in Moldova and Hungary.

While in Chisinau, the Hungarian Minister of Defense had a meeting with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Galbur, who appreciated the cooperation with Hungary in the area of security and defense, especially within the programs of cooperation with NATO, and welcomed the approval of the Assistance Package for Moldova by the defense ministers of the NATO member states in June.

The two officials pleaded for intensifying trade between the two countries.
