Monography devoted to violinists from northern Moldova launched at National Library

A monography of violinists from northern Moldova from 1940s until now was launched at the National Library of Moldova on March 14. The volume “Musical folklore in the north of the Republic of Moldova: violinist repertoire”, written by doctor of arts studies and culturology of the Academy of Music, Theater and Plastic Arts Nicolae Slabari, consists of over 200 musical compositions, IPN reports.

The author said the monography includes the results of the research he conducted while studying and  writing his theses of bachelor, master and doctorate at the Academy of Music, Theater and Plastic Arts. He decided to write a book because he wants to make this information accessible to a large number of people, especially the young generation. The monography includes the most special songs and information about violinists.

Nicolae Slabari said many violinists were forgotten, but they made a special contribution to promoting musical traditions in northern Moldova. To collect materials, he went to his native place in Glodeni district and also to other districts. He also gathered information from the folklore archive of the Academy of Music, Theater and Plastic Arts and other folkloric collections, including personal collections of musicians.

Petre Neamțu, conductor of the Folk Music Orchestra “Folclor”, said this book is intended for those who are fond of folklore and for the young generation that comes to know this treasure and to keep it for history.

According to Svetlana Badrajan, lecturer of the Academy of Music, Theater and Plastic Arts, this is a very valuable monography that can contribute to promoting and safeguarding the national heritage as it includes names of musicians who kept a very rich instrumental heritage. The violinists were key in any brass band and group of instrumentals. The collected musical materials are authentic and unique and represent us as a nation and ethnic group.

National Library director Elena Pintilei said this book-document will definitely find its readers. The chapter with photos is also valuable as these are a local memory for violinists from northern Moldova. “On the one hand, this book is valuable because it is a scientific study. On the other hand, this book can be used by singers too as the musical arrangements presented here can be sung,” she stated.

The book was issued in several hundred copies in the framework of a project implemented by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research.
