The coopting of the Liberal Party into the government coalition is the only guarantee that Moldova will go towards the EU, not towards Russia. The PLDM, PDM and PL must finally reach an agreement and assume governance together because it is dangerous to allow the Communists to support the Government, MEP Monica Macovei said, referring to the political situation in Moldova.
According to her, the Government of Moldova must act in accordance with the people’s vote, which was a pro-European one. It’s vital for Moldova’s pro-European path not to be stopped or slowed down. On the contrary, it must be accelerated. The PLDM and PDM assumed publicly a minority government, securing the PCRM’s support in Parliament.
“Now Moscow is rejoicing. All the countries of the EU, especially those who are skeptical about the enlargement of the Union, will have reasons to temporize the support for Moldova in the European integration process. The PCRM’s support for the government hampers Moldova’s way to the EU. Such a situation is convenient for Moscow even if now Vladimir Voronin does not fully obey Russia’s orders. In the future, he may be replaced by a Russian agent. There is one more reason: the PCRM will not vote for the laws needed for the European integration, especially the anti-corruption laws and those required for the justice reform,” reads the MEP’s statement.
It also says that during the visit paid by representatives of the European parties to Chisinau, the three pro-European parties of Moldova received and accepted the Europeans’ clear message that the road to Europe can be ensured by a governmental alliance between the PLDM, PL and PDM, not by an alliance with the Communists. The three parties should have kept their word, while the PDM should have stopped attacking the PL.
According to Monica Macovei, the new Government of Moldova must be a credible one, oriented towards Europe. Such a Government can be ensured only by an alliance between the PLDM, PL and PDM and possibly other politicians who unconditionally support the European course.
The MEP underlined that if Iurie Leanca holds the post of Premier, this will be a sign of legality and a guarantee of Moldova’s democratization for the Europeans. “I note that the Prosecutor General, the National Anticorruption Agency and any other legal and investigative institutions must not be divided politically,” she stated.
On January 23, the PLDM and PDM formed the Political Alliance for the European Moldova. The coalition does not include the PL, with which negotiations were held for almost two months, because no compromise could be reached.
