Monica Babuc: Fight against corruption cannot be conducted with illegal means

The acting president of the Democratic Party (PDM) Monica Babuc criticizes the way in which the government does what it calls “cleanup of state institutions” by dismissing people who worked for tens of years at ministries and have institutional memory. She noted the parliamentary and extraparliamentary opposition is dispersed, but she anticipates the political forces next year will start to combine forces to build the authentic opposition to the current government, IPN reports.

The acting president of PDM said the dismissal of functionaries from ministries on the pretext of cleaning the system creates an acute shortage of staff.  Such an approach is mistaken as the salaries at state institutions are low.

“The fight against corruption cannot be conducted with illegal means. The objectives set by PAS cannot be achieved by using the procedures for which the former governments were reproached. How much was the Filip Government blamed for working at night?  But when was the 2022 state budget adopted? After midnight. The government says it clears the state institutions and dismisses hundreds of functionaries and this is serious. As a minister who worked for six years in the Government, I know how hard it is to find competent, devoted people with such salaries and, particularly, in such atmosphere in the Republic of Moldova. Everyone should know that there is a law that should be obeyed, but everyone has the right to pronounce,” Monica Babuc stated in the talk show “Place for Dialog” on Radio Moldova channel.

She noted the economic and social sedation in the country can make the extraparliamentary political forces to combine forces and to become more critical of the government.

“Now the opposition is dispersed and almost inexistent. The parliamentary opposition, despite all those competent persons, looks frail and does not enjoy credibility. The opposition from outside Parliament is scattered, weakened and only sporadically pronounces on issues or takes attitude more often, but in not really relevant situations. Constructive opposition is needed from the viewpoint of civilized political polemic. I think after New Year, this rise in prices and the way in which the bills will affect the citizens will lead to the creation of the opposition that will be much more vocal and efficient,” stated Monica Babuc.

Recently, the founding president of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” Andrei Năstase also spoke about the necessity of combining the forces of all the pro-European, pro-democratic parties so as to create constructive opposition to the current government. According to him, their party will initiate negotiations with the either parties on the constitution of a Consultative Council that would offer expertise to the current government.
