The Government pledged to invest the money earned from the sale of the National Stadium in national sport infrastructure. The Cabinet on August 1 approved a decision to this effect, IPN reports.
“I want to bring all the speculations to an end. It should be very clear that this money will go to develop the sport infrastructure in the Republic of Moldova,” stated Pavel Filip.
In the same meeting, the Cabinet approved a decision to negotiate and sign the agreement with the U.S. concerning the construction of a new building of the U.S. Embassy on the site of the National Stadium that is 5.1814 ha in area.
Parliament on July 20 adopted a bill to transfer the plot on which the National Stadium is situated to the United States for constructing the new building of the U.S. Embassy on this. The Socialist MPs didn’t take part in the vote as they left the assembly hall dissatisfied with the initiative. Socialist MP Vasile Bolea said Moldova offers sports facilities in exchange for financial advantages without building other spots complexes instead. Communist MP Vladimir Voronin said the given transaction represents bribe offered to the U.S. for not looking for the stolen bank funds and the Government this way betrays the national interests, committing a crime against the people and against the sport industry.
The National Stadium located on Tighina St was built in 1952 and was demolished in 2007 owing to its old infrastructure. The attempts made by foreign investors to build a new arena failed.
