Money invested by EU in Moldova helps improve quality of life, MEP

The EU funds invested in projects in the Republic of Moldova can really lead to improvements in the quality of life here. That’s why the European side will continue to offer investment support to the country so as to show that the European Union cares about the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, MEP Siegfried Muresan said in a conference held to sum up the results of the visit paid by the European Parliament’s delegation to Moldova during April 3-6, IPN reports.

According to Siegfried Muresan, during the last two days of his visit to Moldova he visited a number of facilities that were renovated, equipped or modernized with the financial contribution of the EU. Among these was the medical center in Varnita, which was extended and more than 12,000 people from both sides of the Nistru River can now receive treatment in modern conditions. The EU allocated €180,000 for extending the medical center and outfitting it. Also in Varnita, he saw a school modernized with EU funds. The money was used to build facilities, carpentry workshops, etc. As a result, 220 children at the kindergarten and 350 children at the school benefit now from better conditions.

At another school, in Carpineni, the heating system was fully replaced with European funds. A number of 183 students and 24 teachers now study and work in completely different conditions. In the past, the school was heated by wood and coal burning stoves. Now this is heated with a biomass system. 10,000 persons from Hancesti district benefit from biomass heating following the investing of €518,000 by the EU. “The biomass heating project is important and it should be noted that 209 public institutions benefitted from this. The EU’s involvement totals €12 million. By supporting biomass heating, we not only contribute to improving people’s lives, but also support the economy at the local level. The carbon dioxide emissions are reduced and the environment is protected,” stated Siegfried Muresan.

The EU also invested €2.4 million in the Manuc Bei complex so as to develop tourist and historical places in Hancesti district and to attract more tourists. Siegfried Muresan said he also visited the General Police Inspectorate where the EU invested €4.4 million in last generation technologies and facilities. “It is very important that the authorities here cooperate with those of the EU in unedifying traffickers, document forgery and other offenses. The safety of people is an area where the EU will invest even more in the near future,” stated the MEP.

The delegation of the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgets and Committee on Foreign Affairs to Moldova ends on April 6. During three days, the MEPs had a number of high-level political meetings and meetings with businessmen and civil society to assess the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU and to see how efficiently the financial support provided by the EU is used.
