Money allocated for inclusion of Romany people is not sufficient, statement

The financial resources allocated by the state for implementing the national plan of action for 2016-2020 for the inclusion of the Roma is not enough for carrying out all the measures defined in the document. With the set budget allocations, only several concrete measures can be implemented, Vera Petuhov, vice director general of the Bureau for Interethnic Relations, stated in the November 23 sitting of Parliament during the Government Hour, IPN reports.

She noted that 816 Romany people registered as unemployed with local employment agencies in the first half of this year. This is 3.2% of the total number of registered jobless people. Among other problems that should be addressed by the state are the children and adults with disabilities, lack of health insurance policies and access to surgery.

According to Vera Petuhov, the number of Romany children out of school has decreased considerably, from 121 on May 31, 2016 and 103 on May 31, 2017 to 59 on October 15, 2017. “School abandonment is due to the difficult financial situation, vagrancy, change of the domicile and parents’ refusal,” stated the official.

The population census of 2014 revealed that there are over 9,000 Romany people in Moldova, but the data provided by expert NGOs show up to 100,000 Romanies live in our country.
