Monastic complex Capriana will become National Museum

The monastic complex Capriana will become National Museum, a branch of the National Museum of Archaeology and History of Moldova. At the Government’s meeting on November 21, Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev said that the complex must become museum “if taking into account the huge costs of restoring it”. The reconstruction works lasted for over four years and were completed on August 28, 2007. The complex includes three churches: the summer church “Assumption of the Virgin”, which was restored by Petru Rares in 1545; the winter church “St. Gheorghe” built in 1840 and the new church “St. Nicolae” dating from 1903. The grave of the metropolitan bishop Gavril Banulescu Bodoni is located near the church “Assumption of the Virgin”. Capriana Monastery is situated about 30 km from Chisinau. The most famous legend is that Capriana Monastery was established by Stephan the Great while he made a halt with his army after chasing away the Tatars over the Nistru. The legend says that Stephan the Great together with his worriers saw a deer and wanted to hunt it. Frightened, the deer went down on its knees and asked to be set free. Stephan thought it was a divine intervention, let the deer live and decided to build a church on that place.
