Moldtelecom director defends decision to raise tariffs

Moldtelecom general director Vitalie Iurcu is denying accusations that the company seeks to raise the tariffs on fixed-line telephony services without no justification. He has stated at a news conference on Tuesday that the measure is included in the company's development strategy which was approved by its Board, an entity which is directly subordinated to the Government, Info-Prim Neo reports. Vitalie Iurcu stressed that he was not a member of the Board. “The Government assumed the responsibility to re-balance the tariffs based on the commitments under Moldova's agreement with the World Trade Organization, and also under the 2005 Moldova-EU Action Plan, and the 2010 Program Document signed by the World Bank's Board, and the Law on Electronic Communication”, said Vitalie Iurcu. Commenting on the statements of Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca who said that Moldtelecom bought 35 vehicles in 2010 without any justification, Vitalie Iurcu said the vehicles were needed to provide better services to the company's 1.5 million clientele. “The cars were not bought for the administration of the company, but for client service purposes, for Moldtelecom's sales representatives and the maintenance personnel”, explained Iurcu. Asked about the size of his salary, Vitalie Iurcu said that he earned no more than his predecessor, receiving a contract-fixed monthly wage of 17,600 lei. He added that his income declaration had been made public. Earlier PM Vlad Filat accused a number of regulatory agencies and the Ministry of Economy of siding with Moldtelecom on this issue. He also said that Moldtelecom's tariff re-balancing program was an unwarranted measure and that the Government wasn't consulted on it.
