Moldova’s accomplishments in the European integration process and the challenges related to the regional security context are discussed in a seminar of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly staged in Chisinau. The Parliament of Moldova hosts the 90th Rose-Roth Seminar of the NATO PA entitled “The European future of the Republic of Moldova: regional context and internal challenges” on November 11-13, IPN reports.
In the opening of the event, Head of Parliament Andrian Candu said Moldova started to use the cooperation platform as an associate member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly 21 years ago. Things have changed in the period, in parts dramatically, both in Moldova and in the region. The developments in Moldova are essential. The country became an associate of the EU and undertook modernization and transformation commitments, based on the EU values.
The official noted that this period is more difficult owing to the political events taking place in Moldova. “However, we want to further cover the chosen path, to the EU. The subjects discussed in this seminar are very important in the regional context. There are challenges inside the country, related especially to the lack of very necessary reforms or their postponement, the fight against corruption, the justice sector reform, and the media sector reform. Important steps were taken in the dialogue with the so-called administration of the Transnistrian region. Maybe we will find now solutions to implement the Association Agreement in the region. There is yet a lot to be done. There are many challenges at national and foreign levels and we count on the support of the NATO member and associate countries in coping with them,” stated the Speaker.
Acting Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega said the seminar is a favorable platform for promoting the dialogue between lawmakers in dealing with security-related issues and issues of common interest. The time is opportune for discussing regional security and the challenges faced by the countries from the region. “The key objective of the Government’s program is to ensure the safety and welfare of the people and the European integration is the most efficient way for achieving it. For the purpose, the Government aims to fully implement the Association Agreement with the EU. Among the major concerns are to eliminate the risks, to reform justice and the law enforcement bodies and to ensure economic, financial and energy security,” he stated.
As to the situation in the Transnistrian region and the frozen conflict, Gheorghe Brega said that Moldova is for resolving the dispute by peaceful ways, based on the principles of sovereignty and integrity of the country, by agreeing a status for the region.
Vice President of the NATO Paolo Alli said the North Atlantic Treaty Organization will continue to support Moldova’s European aspirations and encouraged the authorities to continue doing reforms in accordance with the EU standards, for the people’s benefit.
The Rose-Roth Seminar of the NATO PA represents a forum of debates on topical security-related issues. During the three days of debates, the participants will discuss the political and economic developments in Moldova, the relations between Moldova and NATO, strengthening of integrity and democratic control, the Moldovan-Russian relations, the Transnistrian conflict settlement process, the implications of the aggression against Ukraine on regional and global security, Eastern neighborhood and the relations with the EU after the annual Riga conference and the informational war in Eastern Europe.
