The Alliance for European Integration (AEI) intends to avoid snap elections by amending the Constitution through a national referendum, which should be held by June 16. The announcement was made by the four leaders of the alliance on Tuesday evening, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to speaker Mihai Ghimpu, the leader of the Liberal Party, Parliament will soon pass amendments to the fundamental law, which will be later submitted to a direct popular vote. The AEI leaders said the new variant of the Constitution will be made public shortly., A turnout of 50 percent + 1 is required for the referendum to be considered valid. The AEI's four leaders avoided to tell whether the alliance had a common position on the way of electing the president – either through direct vote or by the legislative. “The new Constitution will solve this problem as well”, said Vlad Filat, the Liberal-Democrat leader.
