Moldova’s Roma urged to go to the polls
Members of the Roma community in Moldova are asked to exercise their right to vote in the April 5 elections and show political will as they do not take an active part in the political activities. “We want to encourage the Romanies to vote so as they are more responsible and make a conscious decision,” Nicolae Radita, executive director of the National Roma Center of Moldova, has told Info-Prim Neo.
As part of the project “One Right for a Day”, the National Roma Center of Moldova organized meetings with Roma voters in Edinet, Soroca and Durlesti. The fourth meeting is to take place today in Comrat.
According to Nicolae Radita, the low election turnout of the Roma voters is due to the fact that the political parties usually ignore the Romanies and their problems.
“The subjects in which the Romanies are interested cannot be found in election platforms, while the current electoral lists of the parties contain no Romany,” Radita said.
The National Roma Center of Moldova aims to monitor the April 5 elections in the 33 Roma settlements of Moldova and to publish a report about the Roma turnout and about the way that the election campaign was held in these communities.
Presently, there are no settlements in Moldova headed by Roma mayors, while the number of local Roma councilors is lower than five. No Roma ever entered the Parliament of Moldova.
The project “One Right for a Day” is funded by the United States Embassy in Moldova and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
