“Moldova’s Railways” to be modernized

The state-run company “Moldova’s Railways” is preparing a modernization plan that is aimed at ensuring structural reorganization and attraction of investments for renewing the trains and the infrastructure, Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Vasile Botnari said in a meeting held to celebrate the Railroad Worker’s Day, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from the Ministry.

“The railroad network of Moldova needs enormous investments in renewing the trains and the infrastructure. Investment projects should be launched to electrify the railroads and to build European gauge lines so as to attract new transit flows. We are now at an advanced stage of discussions with a number of foreign partners with whose support we plan to implement important investment projects in the field,” said the minister.

Vasile Botnari underlined that there were initiated infrastructure projects, including to rehabilitate the damaged railroad segments on the Giurgiulesti – Cahul road and to construct a new railroad that will ensure connection between the Giurgiulesti Port and Romania’s Railways.

The railroads managed by “Moldova’s Railways” are 1,157 km long.
