Moldova’s progress in migration presented abroad

Moldova’s progress in integrating the migration component into the national development strategies and the country’s accomplishments in the field were presented in Tunis, within the meeting of the Coordination Committee of the Joint IOM-UNDP Global Program “Mainstreaming Migration into National Development Strategies” that is held on October 3 and 4, IPN reports.

According to the Bureau for Diaspora Relations, the event involves a delegation of Moldova that includes the Bureau’s head Olga Coptu, coordinator of the “Migration and Development” Program Gennady Cretu, UNDP programs specialist Valeria Ieseanu and mayor of Cosnita village of Dubasari district Alexei Gafeli.

Olga Coptu said the Program significantly contributed to facilitating the benefits of the tie between migration and development. Currently, the Government is doing major institutional reforms and is using the project’s support to ensure the continuity of the efforts made to increase the capacities of the governmental subdivisions responsible for migration. Under the aegis of the Program, there were taken a number of steps, such as the drafting of the National Action Plan on Return and Reintegration of Migrant Workers (2017-2020), assessment of the National Program to Attract Remittances to Develop the Economy “Pare 1+1”, working out of the National Strategy “Diaspora 2025” etc.

The head of the Bureau for Diaspora Relations said migration has a significant impact on the economic and human development of Moldova. Therefore, it is important to integrate aspects of the diaspora, migration and development into sector policy areas that were earlier overlooked, such as health, education, agriculture and small business.

The Global Program “Mainstreaming Migration into National Development Strategies” is implemented in eight countries, namely Moldova, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Jamaica, Kirgizstan, Morocco, Tunisia, and Serbia, with a view to facilitating the integration of migration into national development documents and planning processes in the participating states and to continuously monitoring and adjusting these states’ approaches to migration and development, in consultation with all the relevant players. In Moldova, the program is implemented by IOM Moldova in concert with UNDP Moldova, under the auspices of the State Chancellery, and is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
