Nicolae Timofti will be invested as President of Moldova in a solemn ceremony that will be held at the Palace of the Republic today, March 23, starting at 2pm. After the swearing-in ceremony, the head of state will lay flowers at the monument to Stephan the Great. Afterward, a standard military ceremony will take place at the State Residence. The day will end with a reception at the Palace of the Republic, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Nicolae Timofti, 64, was born in Ciutulesti, Floresti. After finishing the secondary school, from 1964 until 1965 he had served at the Floresti road maintenance department. Afterward, he worked as a forester until 1967. In 1967-1972, Nicolae Timofti studied at the Law Faculty of the State University of Moldova.
After the university, he did his military service in Eastern Germany for two years. There, he obtained the rank of senior lieutenant. In 1974-1976, he had worked as a senior consultant at the Ministry of Justice of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic. On April 11, 1976 he was elected judge of the former district Frunze of Chisinau, from where he was transferred to the Supreme Court on April 10, 1980.
In June 1990, he was elected vice president of the Supreme Court - chairman of the Penal Board and representative of the Judicial College. In 1996, he became president of the Association of Judges of Moldova. In October 1996, he was awarded the Labor Glory order, while in December 1998 he was conferred the title of Emeritus Person.
From 1996 until 2001, he served as the representative of the Chisinau Court of Appeals and as a member on the Council of Magistrates of Moldova. In 1995 - 2000 and 2005 – 2009, he had been a member of the Court’s Council. In 2005, he was named as judge at the Supreme Court of Justice.
In 2009, he was elected as a member of the Supreme Council of Magistrates without the right to simultaneously work as a judge. In March 2011, he was appointed as chairman of the Supreme Council of Magistrates.
Nicolae Timofti and his wife Margareta have three sons.
Nicolae Timofti is the fourth President of Moldova. In 1990-1996, the post of President was held by Mircea Snegur, in 1996-2001 by Petru Lucinschi, while in 2001-2009 by Vladimir Voronin. From April 2009 until December 2010, the position of head of state on an interim bases was held by Mihai Ghimpu and then by Marian Lupu.
