Moldova’s presence at Vilnius Summit is a sign of progress made by country, Corman

The Republic of Moldova is prepared to go further to achieve its goal as regards the economic integration and political association with the European Union, Head of Parliament Igor Corman said in the meeting of heads of parliamentary foreign policy commissions of the EU and the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy member states that was held on the sidelines of the Vilnius EaP Summit, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from Parliament, in his speech Igor Corman said that Moldova’s presence at the Vilnius Summit is a clear sign of the progress made by the country until now. The authorities’ firm commitment and the support provided by the people allowed to swiftly and efficiently respond to the EU requirements as regards the Association Agreement, including the creation of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. After the initialing of the accord, Moldova will more precisely determine the next stages on its road to a closer economic and political partnership with the EU.

“The European integration is a continuous process, not only a result. We know that Parliament and the public and private sector institutions will have to make significant effort for the full economic and political association and for the accession to the EU in the end. The liberalization of visas represents a powerful motivation for the Moldovan people, whose active support is decisive for continuing the initiated reforms,” stated Igor Corman.

He added that the European integration is chiefly an instrument for internal development, while the results of reforms will bring the state closer to the people and will increase civic participation. Moldova further counts on the support of the European partners. He called on the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union to offer support in taking the political decision as regards the liberalization of the visa regime for Moldovans.

The Speaker urged the European lawmakers to extend their cooperative approach also to other countries of the region, expressing readiness to house the meeting of the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy in Chisinau in 2014. Igor Corman closed his visit to Vilnius and is to take part in the meeting of the Council of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly in Sankt Petersburg in the evening of November 28. After the meeting, he will meet with his Russian counterpart Sergey Naryshkin.
