The official number of Moldova’s population will be reviewed this year. The process will start in summer and will end in autumn. There will be recounted the number of people with ordinary residence in Moldova and recalculated the main demographic statistics indicators and macroeconomic indicators, such as the GDP per capital, health and education indicators and the labor force, IPN reports.

The review will be managed by the National Bureau of Statistics with the assistance of UNFPA and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, in accordance with the data of the population and dwelling census of 2014. This time, those who haven’t been at home for over a year will not be included in the database. The data about these will be obtained from the Border Police.

National Bureau of Statistics director general Vitalie Valcov said the estimation of the annual emigration flow will be the most serious challenge in the recount process.

UNFPA Representative in Moldova Rita Columbia said the offering of high-quality statistical data is crucial for achieving the country development goals centering on the meeting of the real needs of the population and realization of their rights.

Simone Giger, Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Moldova, said that in the process of reviewing the statistical indicators and of validating these, the participation of all the national institutions is very important for ensuring the offering of high-quality data that would be used to work out public policies based on evidence.

As a result of the process of reviewing the main socioeconomic indicators based on the estimated number of present people, the authorities will possess updated data for formulating public policies and the national development strategy “Moldova 2030”.

The population and dwelling census taken in May 2014 showed Moldova had 2 804 801 people. It was estimated that 193 434 persons were covered by the census. Thus, the total population was 2 998 235.
