Moldova’s population made up 3.6 mln as of early 2007

Preliminary data computed by the National Statistics Bureau show that on January 1, 2007, Moldova was permanent home to about 3.581 mln persons, including 1.478 mln in cities and towns, and about 2.103 mln in rural areas. At the same time, the population present in Moldova at that date was of 3.432 mln, according to official estimations, including 1.36 mln in urban area, and 2.071 mln in villages. Chisinau Municipality was home to 780,300 people, Balti Municipality to 147.100, and Gagauzia territorial-administrative unit to 159.800. The most populous raions are Orhei - 127,300, Hancesti - 124,300, and Cahul - 124,100. The least populated are Dubasari - 35,400 and Basarabeasca - 29,600 inhabitants. According to the National Statistics Bureau, in the period between the two censuses, of 1989 and 2004, Moldova’s population decreased by circa 350,000, including persons that left the country for more than one year. Data for the beginning of the year were confirmed by the Demographic Statistics Department, following check-up surveys in a number of settlements. The number of urban residents was computed on the basis of the State Register of Population and the evidence registers of family doctors.
