The number of Moldova’s population with regular residence as of 1 January 2023 was 2,512,800 people, down by 2% compared to the beginning of the previous year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The female population, as in previous years, prevails. At the beginning of the year, it constituted 1,325,200 persons or 52.7% of the country’s population.
As in previous years, the decrease in population was largely due to net migration – 43,000 people in 2022.
The average age of the population increased by 0.4 years, from 39.9 years to 40.3 years. The average age of the female population was 42.1 years, 3.8 years higher than the average age of the male population – 38.3 years.
The population pyramid at the beginning of 2023 clearly shows a pattern of shrinking in the 36-56 years category, which reflects the cumulative effect of negative net migration rates for young adults in recent decades.
The share of the aging population (population aged 60 and over per 100 inhabitants) at the beginning of 2023 was 23.8 people, compared to 23 people in 2022.
