In the period between the two censuses, of 1989 and 2004, the population of Moldova has reduced by 350 thousand persons, including people who left abroad for more than one year. This way, the drop in Moldova’s population averages 0.5% annually. As of 1 January 2007, the number of the population settled in Moldova constituted 3581.1 persons. Statistics show that the current demographic characteristics outline concerning trends of the human development, the decrease in the birth rate, demographic aging, increase in the mortality rate, increase in the number of divorces, external migration. According to statistics, about 37.6 thousand children were born in Moldova in 2006, by 8 thousand less than in 1997, and the birth rate has diminished from 12.5 to 10.5 newborns per 1000 inhabitants, being inferior to the birth rate of 1990, when it has constituted 18 newborns per 1000 inhabitants. This fact has accelerated the demographic aging and the reduction in the rate of young population aged under 14, along with the increase in the rate of the population aged above 60. Compared with 1997, the share of the young population under 14 has reduced from 25.6 to 18.1%, diminishing by 283.4 thousand persons. At the same time, the share of those aged above 65 has increased from 9.3 to 10.3%, by 29.5%. At the end of 2005, a quarter of the population in Moldova was aged 60 and above, while about 11% was aged 80 and above. The average age of the population has increased from 32.9 years in 1989 to 35.6 in 2007, placing Moldova in the category of countries with adult population. The Government has approved last week a draft decision on the demographic situation of Moldova, which envisages undertaking urgent actions with a view to remedying the demographic situation. At the same time, the secretariat of the National Commission for Population and Development is to be created within the Ministry of Economy and Commerce.
