The provisional number of Moldovans with ordinary residence on the country’s territory on January 1, 2021 was 2.597,1 billion, 1.8% down compared with the start of 2020 and 10.5% down compared with the start of 2014. The estimated number of people with ordinary residence in the Republic of Moldova in 2021 shows that the population continues aging. The population aging coefficient (people aged 60 and up) in 2021 was estimated at 22.5 persons per 100 people, as opposed to 21.7 in 2020, IPN reports.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the population pyramid at the beginning of 2021 showed that the people aged between 35 and 54 declined in number as a result of the cumulative effect of the negative net migration rate for young adults during the last decades.
As the previous years, the female population is dominant. At the start of 2021, it represented 52.3% of the country’s population.
The population decline in 2020 was primarily influenced by migration. The natural growth in 2020 (-9,900 persons) almost doubled compared with a year before (-4,000 persons in 2019), continuing being negative and influencing the population decline.
The data do not include the districts from the left side of the Nistru and the municipality of Bender.
