Moldova’s opponents at 2013 CIS Cup become known
The 21st Football Cup of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Baltic Countries will bring together 12 national teams. The games will be played in Saint Petersburg on January 18-27, 2013. The draw to decide the composition of the groups was held at the head office of the Football Union of Russia on December 14. Moldova’s squad will play in Group C against Ukraine, Turkmenistan, and Lithuania, Info-Prim Neo reports.
On January 19, Moldova meets Turkmenistan, in a day – Ukraine, while on January 22 – Lithuania.
Group A involves Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Tajikistan, while Group B – Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Uzbekistan.
In the previous edition, Moldova ranked eighth.
Starting with 2012, the competition involves the champions of the ex-Soviet countries. The organizers decided to change the format of the CIS Cup because the interest of some of the participating states and of football fans in this tournament has decreased over the last few years.
Sheriff Tiraspol won the CIS Cup in 2003 and 2009, while Zimbru Chisinau were a finalist in 2000. In the previous editions, Moldova was also represented by Constructorul Chisinau, Dacia Chisinau, and Iskra-Stal Rybnitsa.
