Moldova's energy security jeopardized by lawsuit
The litigation between Moldelectrica and the Ukrainian company Energoalians will represent a major threat to the energy security of Moldova in case the lawsuit is won by the latter and the court awards the claimed $62 million, stated Moldovan Economy Minister Valeriu Lazar after the meeting of the Supreme Security Council on Wednesday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“This is a really serious threat. I don't even want to imagine what the consequences might be, because it concerns the integrity of the very core of the national energy system. These are no jokes”, stated Lazar. While the claim is $62 million, Moldelectrica's annual budget is only $20 million, so “the recent so-called raider attacks on the banking system is nothing compared to this litigation”, he added.
Acting President Marian Lupu announced that this case would be examined by the Chisinau Court of Economic Appeals on October 25. “This case is being monitored by all the relevant institutions and by the Supreme Security Council. Let me reiterate that this is a claim we consider to be illegitimate”, he said, adding: “all the institutions supervised by the Supreme Security Council will take every legal measure possible to not allow a violation of the law”.
Energoalians claims from Moldelectrica a historical debt of $26 million plus $36 million in default penalties.
