Moldova’s consul in Odessa suspected of taking bribe for issuing visa

Anticorruption prosecutors  carried out searches at the Consulate of the Republic of Moldova in Odessa, Ukraine, within a case of passive corruption. The consul is suspected of issuing a long-stay visa for 60 days to a citizen of Arab origin last year in breach of the law. For this service, he asked for and received €100, IPN reports.

According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, the man will be investigated for passive corruption. When being questioned, he didn’t admit his guilt. He was banned from leaving the country for a period of 30 days.

If he is found guilty, the consult will be fined 50,000 to 100,000 lei and banned from holding particular public posts or performing a particular activity for a period of up to five years.
