Moldova’s Catholic Church supports Orthodoxy course in schools

The Chisinau Roman-Catholic Diocese praised the initiative of the Moldovan Orthodox Church to introduce mandatory religion courses in schools as useful and important. “The course will allow the opportunity to discover God, to discover communication through the love between God and man, between the Creator and the creature, between people and peoples”, the Diocese said in a statement, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. Vladimir and Anton Cosa, the heads of the Orthodox and, respectively, Catholic Churches in Moldova, held a meeting recently to discuss the issue. According to the Catholic Diocese, the government is responsible to promote and maintain public order and therefore it should let itself guided by the moral law, and should recognize, respect and promote the human and moral values preached by the Church. Concerning the name and content of the course, both Churches agreed that the introduction of the mandatory course titled “The Basics of Orthodoxy” cannot constrain other denominations as it is destined mainly for the Orthodox Christians. “The Catholic Church, recognizing the historical and cultural interconnections between the Orthodox Church and the Moldovan land, considers that all the Christian denominations have the right to educate their own believers, but it must be done in a clear legal context, within the limits of the common wellbeing and public order, and in any case, under the sign of responsibility”, it was said in the statement.
