Moldova’s archaeology to be protected by law

A law will ensure the protection of Moldova’s Archaeological patrimony. Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev requested that the bill’s working out process should be hastened and a Programme on the Protection, Research and Administration of Archaeological Monuments created. The programme is to be supplemented with a detailed Action Plan. An Archaeological Register will also be created after a general inventory of the existent archaeological monuments. Within a month, a special commission will present proposals to improve protection of the archaeological patrimony. The commission will include representatives of ministries and central authorities, Academy of Sciences of Moldova and specialised NGOs. Authorities say that the archaeological patrimony was neglected in the past 15 or 20 years. The legal framework in the domain is also imperfect and has to be adjusted to international conventions and treaties.
