Moldova's Acting President: Neither state nor people need early elections

The Head of Parliament and Caretaker President of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu is confident that the new head of state will be elected. “Unfortunately, we have a Constitution that was modified according to the interests of the political parties, principally the Communists Party. The head of state is empowered to dissolve the Parliament though Moldova is a parliamentary republic and the president is elected by the vote of 61 MPs,” Mihai Ghimpu said Monday during a program on the public radio station Radio Moldova. “Anyway, we must observe the Constitution. The first round of the presidential election will take place on October 23. I'm sure the president will be elected. If some of the people consider that new early elections must be held, I want to tell them that they are not in Moldova's and their interests. Imagine that we initiate reforms and have again parliamentary elections in summer. These reforms will be again interrupted and no results will be achieved,” the Speaker said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. “I'm anti-Communist, but I respect the voters' choice. The people can vote for any party they like. But the interest of the state must be above the party interests. If the Moldovan people do not want the crisis to deepen, they must insist that the president be elected so as to avoid early legislative elections,” Ghimpu said, adding that the international financial organizations and partner countries that promised support advise making everything possible to avoid new elections.
