About 22,000 Moldovans holding Romanian nationality took part in the November 2 presidential elections of Romania. They said they came to vote for closer relations with Romania and the EU so as to keep the identity, the nation and the Romanian culture. The people also said they want the new President of Romania to be a kind and decent man who will help Moldova to integrate into the EU, IPN reports.
The polling places worked from 7am until 9pm. Some of the people said they had to queue up for hours in order to cast their ballots, while others could not vote. Almost 100 people didn’t manage to vote at the polling place established inside the Embassy of Romania. A number of 21 polling places were set up in Moldova for the Romanian presidential elections, four of which in Chisinau.
Fourteen candidates ran in the presidential elections in Romanian. With 56.21% of the votes counted, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party- National Union for Romania’s Progress-Conservative Party Victor Ponta holds the lead with 39.57% of the vote. He is followed by the candidate of the Christian Liberal Alliance Klaus Iohannis with 30.19% and independent candidate Calin Popescu Tariceanu with 5.83% of the ballot.
