Moldovans support dual citizenship for public officials, poll
The number of those who think that the holders of double citizenship should be allowed to serve as public officials exceeds the number of those who believe that it would be wrong, the Public Opinion Barometer (POB) shows.
According to POB, while 42.4% of the respondents agree with the idea, the percentage of those who oppose it stands at slightly below 30%.
More than 70% believe it is a good thing that the legislation allows dual citizenship, while 9.3% consider it wrong.
Parliament allowed dual citizenship for Moldovans in 2003. On October 11, 2007, Parliament passed in first reading a bill that bars certain public offices to holders of dual citizenship. Under the bill, the holders of dual citizenship will not be able to occupy the following posts: President of Moldova, member of the Government, Member of Parliament, police officer, judge, ombudsman, customs officer, and other. At second reading, the majority faction suggested including mayors and district chairmen in that list, but the bill has not been signed into law yet.
Representatives of different political parties as well as members of the civil society have criticised this initiative.
