Moldovans prefer joint electoral system to proportional one

If a referendum on the modification of the method of choosing the lawmakers was held next Sunday, 22% of the Moldovans would vote for a joint electoral system, when half of the MPs are elected under party lists, while the other half in uninominal constituencies, shows a poll by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova, IPN reports.

16% of the Moldovans would vote for keeping the current electoral system (under party lists). 15% of the respondents would prefer the MPs to be elected only in uninominal constituencies. 41% of those polled were unable to answer this question, while 6% said they will take part in the polls.

In April, Parliament passed in two readings a bill on the joint electoral system proposed by Democratic MP Vlad Plahotniuc. In May, by the joint vote of the lawmakers of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Communist Party, the law was abrogated and the old electoral system was thus restored.

The poll was carried out between October 21 and November 2 on a sample of 1,192 respondents from 79 settlements. The margin of sampling error is +/- 2.8%.
