Moldovans in Estonia prepare News Year’s food at home

Young Moldovan woman Mihaela Galca, who settled in Estonia together with her family over two years ago, said she will prepare traditional Moldovan dishes for the New Year’s Eve dinner, IPN reports.

“On New Year’s Eve, we will stay at home and will celebrate inside the family, with our two ‘treasures’,” said Mihaela, referring to their two daughters. She noted that the youngest daughter is too small to go and celebrate together with her friends.

The young woman also said that in Estonia Christmas is observed on December 25 and there is no other Christmas on New Year’s Eve according to another calendar. “The people visit their parents and relatives and offer each other presents. A lot of persons leave the town and celebrate at tourist facilities. They rent homes together with friends, as we also did on Christmas, and amuse themselves to the maximum. The fireworks are mandatorily present,” stated Mihaela Galca.

Speaking about the holiday meal, Mihaela said that she prepares traditional food such as beef salad, meat jelly and forcemeat rolls of cabbage. On Christmas, Mihaela prepared hominy with ewe’s cheese from Moldova. “They don’t have ewe’s cheese here, as they don’t have sour bran and water,” she stated.

Mihaela Galca noted she would ’import’ her mother and her relatives from Moldova into Estonia.
