Moldovans – from sexual exploitation to labor exploitation

In 2000, the Moldovan migrants were exploited mainly sexually, but in 2007 they were exploited principally for labor, especially the men. This is one of the conclusions reached by the International Center “La Strada”, which conducted an awareness-raising campaign themed “Migrants' Vulnerability to Exploitation and Human Trafficking” during June-December 2009, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The campaigned was aimed at informing the people about the dangers to which the Moldovan migrants are exposed and women's vulnerability to exploitation and trafficking,” the head of “La Strada” Center Daniela Misail-Nikitin said at a news conference. “The economic migrants do not know their rights and where they can seek help when necessary.” According to Daniela Misail-Nikitin, more than 50% of the calls the Center are made by persons who inquire about possibilities of going abroad. About 70 such calls are recorded daily. This shows that the Moldovans still want to go abroad to work. At the same time, Moldovan migrants' destination countries have changed. Earlier, most of the Moldovans went to Italy, Spain and Portugal, but now they choose Israel, the Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, the UK, lately Thailand, Syria and Qatar. Thailand and Syria need more female dancers, while Qatar – workers for the oil industry. Daniela Misail-Nichitin considers that many people want to go abroad because they encounter financial problems at home. 80% of the women were subject to violence, especially in the family. The Center's head called on the Government to formulate balanced migration policies where people's interests will be above the state interests, and an efficient mechanism for cooperation with the countries where the Moldovans work. During the conference, there was launched the book “The Life of a Night or Totentanz” written by Claudia Partole. “Migration affected mainly the women,” said Claudia Partole. “I lived the experience of being paid better abroad and decided to write about a night spent in a country where nobody cares about you.” The book is distributed in Moldova and Romania and will have a continuation.
