The Moldovans who do not insure themselves medically and who do not form part of the categories insured by the state will be penalized for every overdue day with 0.1% of the fixed contributions paid into the mandatory health insurance fund (health policy) and a fine of 500 to 1,000 lei.
The National Health Insurance Company (CNAM) informs the private individuals without health policies about the necessity of paying penalties. If the penalties are not paid, the company can sue these persons. The medically uninsured people benefit from the same medical services, but pay for them themselves.
The Moldovans who went to live abroad for a longer period or have a permit to stay in another country will be exempted from paying the mandatory health insurance premium if they prove that they had been away for over 183 days. The confirmatory documents must be submitted to the local agencies of the CNAM.
The mandatory health insurance contribution represents 7% of the salary. Half of this sum is paid by the employee, while another half by the employer. The health insurance premium is paid by people who are out of work and by owners of farmland, lessors and lessees, founders of private companies, notaries and lawyers. This year the health policy costs 3,318 lei. The state insures medically the persons under 18, the students, the pensioners, and the pregnant women.
