Moldovans abroad will be able to vote in parliamentary elections during two days

The parliamentary elections and national referendums at the polling places established for the Moldovans abroad will take place during two consecutive days. A bill to this effect was passed by Parliament in the first reading, IPN reports.

One of the bill authors, Liberal-Reformist MP Valeriu Saharneanu said the number of Moldovans eligible to vote, who live or work abroad, increases annually. More than 500,000 Moldovans were abroad, on a long term, last year. Most of the times, when national elections are held, the polling places set up abroad for the diaspora are located inside embassies and are insufficient in number. The settlements where the Moldovans live are situated at different distances from the towns where there are Moldovan embassies.

Deputy Head of Parliament Sergiu Sarbu said that this bill could violate the Constitution, which provides that all the citizens are equal before the law. Three is also no certainty that the Moldovans who will vote abroad will not come to vote in Moldova too. For example, a Moldova who voted in Verona can fly home the next day and vote in Moldova as well.

The bill is to be adopted in the second reading. The parliamentary elections of this year will take place on November 30.
