The young people of Moldova are afraid to take to the streets because they were marked by the events that followed April 7, 2009, considers civic activist Veaceslav Balacci. He made the statement in the talk show “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.
Speaking about the protest that was staged last Sunday by the NGO “Moldova’s Youth”, Balacci said the organizers expected that a lot of young people will come, but almost half of those involved were elderly people. “The lesson of April 7, 2009 was very harsh and left serious imprints on the young people. Now they are simply afraid to protest peacefully and defend their rights. Our young people grew older overnight, maybe before time,” he stated.
The activist noted that the young people had been scared by Internet warnings that instigators would be among the protesters, who would cause the protest to degenerate into violence. “It’s true that the protest was also attended by representatives of pro-Russian organizations. But those from “Moldova’s Youth” sent a signal to those from the PLDM and PDM, which, during the almost two months of talks, did everything possible for the most pro-European party to be excluded from government,” said Balacci.
