Domnica Cemortan, the Moldovan woman who witnessed the shipwreck of the cruise liner “Costa Concordia” in Italy, said that the Moldovan and Italian media violated her rights and disseminated incorrect information about the accident that happened almost two years ago. In a news conference at IPN, Domnica Cemortan said she will sue the media outlets that denigrated her.
“I was hired at Costa Crociere (which owns Costa Concordia – a.n.) as a result of a contest. After I was accepted, I attended a professional training course for three weeks in Genova, Italy. When my contract expired, I was offered to go on a cruise by Costa Concordia for several days at a lower price. This is how I got on the wrecked ship,” stated Domnica Cemortan.
She underlined that when the accident happened, she was on the command deck, not near the captain of the ship, as the media reported. “The captain was surrounded by 15 officers at that time,” she stated
Domnica Cemortan said that she worked as an ‘ambassador of Russian’. She translated announcements, the menu at the restaurant and the ship’s newspaper for Russian tourists. When the ship was wrecked, she was on board as a guest, as she was on vacation.
The hearings on the shipwreck will restart in October. Domnica Cemortan said she possesses information that will astonish the prosecutors and judges. “I think the company Costa Crociere should be held accountable as it was aware of the accident,” she stated.
She also said that time has passed since the shipwreck, but she is still asked what she did on the ship and in what relations she was with the captain. A number of media outlets denigrated her and made comment that incited violence against her and even crime.
Domnica Cemortan sued the Italian newspaper “La Nazione” for reporting that she told the prosecutors that she loved the ship’s captain. She also sued Pro TV Chisinau, Publika TV and the paper “Komsomolyskaya Pravda” for the reason that they didn’t filter out the comments written to the news about the accident. The Moldovan woman will make more statements for the journalists after she gives testimony in the Italian courts.
