The President of the European Comiscion Jose Manuel Barroso said he strongly believes in Moldova’s European prospect. He made the statement in a news conference held jointly with Prime Minister Iurie Leanca in Brussels on May 15, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from the Government.
The European official reasserted the European Commission’s commitment to the Moldovan people and the united and modern state Moldova. The Association Agreement is aimed at developing the democratic principles, guaranteeing the rule of law and the fundamental freedoms and is an essential instrument for supporting Moldova’s transformation. This accord has also economic components, such as the opening of markets, improvement of the business climate and building of a prosperous future for all the Moldovans.
“We already decided to allocate €130 million in technical assistance today,” said the official. According to him, there was also adopted a package of €30 million for helping Moldova prepare for the signing of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement,” said Jose Manuel Barroso.
He noted that from autumn the Moldovan wines will have full access to the EU market. The export quotas on Moldovan fruit and vegetables will grow.
As to the energy, the official said that nobody in the region wants to use the energy reserves as a political weapon because the effects would be uncontrollable. “That’s why we work with Moldova and Romania to identify more possibilities of interconnection for transporting natural gas. Over the next weeks, we will finalize this accord so as to guarantee the supply of Moldova with gas,” stated Jose Manuel Barroso. .
Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said the Government’s meeting with the European Commission is a novelty in the bilateral cooperation, which symbolizes the progress made and Moldova’s determination to continue to do reforms of a high quality. “Undoubtedly, this year is a year of success in the cooperation with the EU because we achieved tangible results in reforming Moldova and its institutions,” he stated.
Iurie Leanca said that Chisinau is waiting with interest for the conference on investments, whose opening in Chisinau on June 12 will be attended by Jose Manuel Barroso.
