The Moldovan-Ukrainian border crossing point in Giurgiulești-Reni was inaugurated after reconstruction. It will allow the customs services of Moldova and Ukraine to work together to facilitate the transit of freight and passenger transport. The project is the result of joint efforts between Moldova, Ukraine, Romania and partners from the U.S. and the EU, in the context of the Quint Meetings, IPN reports.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, the new border crossing point will streamline customs traffic for both trucks and buses, which will benefit from a specially designed lane. Passengers will no longer be obliged to stop at the Moldovan checkpoint, as all examination procedures will be carried out on the Ukrainian side. This will significantly reduce the waiting time for crossing the border.
The operationalization of the Giurgiulești-Reni joint checkpoint, following the completion of the reconstruction works, was announced at the Quint multilateral meeting. It involved the Ministry’s State Secretary Mircea Păscăluță and his counterparts – State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu, and Deputy Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine Serhiy Derkach.
Mircea Păscăluță stressed the importance of this moment during the Quint Meeting. “We marked an important moment of connection between the three countries. Our commitment to supporting Ukraine in rebuilding its infrastructure remains strong. We want to allow transport to pass easily from Ukraine to the EU and vice versa, via the Republic of Moldova. We submitted to the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) a co-financing project for the access road to the border crossing point. This road now has two lanes and its extension to four lanes will considerably facilitate transportation,” noted the official.
The delegation led by State Secretary Păscăluță also visited the Giurgiulești-Galati border crossing point, where they had discussions with State Secretary Scrioșteanu and EU and U.S. officials about the possibility of establishing a coordinated checkpoint in Galati. To this end, a common agenda was agreed. This, together with the widening of the access road to the border crossing point, will be the next step within the initiated framework, which will open a fast route and corridor to the Romanian port of Galati.
