Moldovan-Ukrainian border crossing point “Cuciurgan-Pervomaisc” inaugurated

The reciprocal recognition of property, demarcation of state border and functioning of the Dnestrovsk power plant were discussed in the July 17 meeting of Prime Minister Pavel Filip and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. The officials met on the occasion of the inauguration of the joint Moldovan-Ukrainian state border crossing point “Cuciurgan-Pervomaisc”, IPN reports.

Pavel Filip said with Petro Poroshenko he discussed the roadmap signed with his Ukrainian counterpart in Kiev in February and agreed that they will work so that concrete results on each matter defined in the roadmap are presented in November, when the intergovernmental commission will meet.

“The joint control at this checkpoint and in the future at other points as well is from my viewpoint a demonstration of the good and friendly relations between Moldova and Ukraine,” said Pavel Filip, noting that the constitutional authorities make a clear difference between the so-called leaders from the Transnistrian region and the citizens of the Republic of Moldova who live in the region.

Pavel Filip insisted that the joint border control is in the interests of the business entities and citizens of the Transnistrian region. The businessmen will not have to cover long distance to other customs posts to perform all the customs procedures. “Such speculations that the opening of the joint checkpoint represents a blockage of the Transnistrian region are strange. These are statements made by the leaders from there, but these are not true. I want to give you some figures. Exports from the region to Ukraine in 2016 alone rose by over US$ 10 million, while 60% of the goods produced in the region are intended for export to the EU. This event probably does not suit some of the leaders, but is definitely welcomed by our citizens who live here,” stated the Premier.

Petro Poroshenko said that from now on the border police of Moldova and Ukraine will work in concert to ensure the security of the two states, in the interests of both sides. He informed that he today signed an order to extend the presence of the EUBAM Mission at other border crossing points so as to fight smuggling.

The President of Ukraine noted that in the meeting they discussed the supply of electric power to Moldova and the demarcation of the joint border. They also discussed the possibility of extending the number of joint checkpoints on the Moldovan Ukrainian border, in Iampoli-Cosauti and at the railway border crossing point Berezeno-Basarabeasca. The discussions on the issues will be continued in Chisinau.
