Moldovan Premier visits Moscow to discuss gas issues

Moldovan Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanyi is to pay a working visit to Moscow today for talks on gas supplies for the Republic of Moldova, Info-Prim Neo learned from the governmental press service. The Cabinet's sitting scheduled for today was canceled. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Government spokesperson Vitalie Condratski said the situation remained unchanged on Wednesday morning – Moldova was still receiving gas from Ukraine's stocks through the northern gas main at Alexeevka, in amounts needed to cover the minimal demands for gas of household consumers and social institutions. Condratski couldn't tell the exact volume of gas pumped by Ukraine to Moldova. But he said the amounts received were enough to supply households with gas and avoid gas and power outages. However, supplies to industrial consumers reduced. Most heating units are now running on the economy mode. “With this mode switched on, the supplies we receive are sufficient”, said Condratski. The Russian concern Gazprom opened gas taps on January 13 in the morning, but several ours later it was reported that Ukraine had blocked the flow of gas westward. Kiev denied the allegations, saying Russia itself had failed to provide the necessary volumes of gas for it to be pumped onward. No Russian gas has reached Moldova so far and there is no information whether any renewed supplies are expected in the immediate future.
